"Let your light so shine before all that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Mt. 5.16)
St. Matthew Catholic School is not a typical Alberta school. Our teachers do so much more than provide first-rate instruction using proven successful methodologies and state-of-the-art technology. They balance these important academic priorities against our responsibilities to our fellow human beings. For this most important objective, Jesus Christ is our model and guide.
This holistic approach to education helps us to produce students who are a cut above the rest when it comes to both academic excellence and humanitarian causes. A look at our Provincial Achievement Test scores reveals that St. Matthew students score higher than the provincial average on many indicators, while a look at our charity events reveals an equal propensity toward excellence. For example, for our annual Terry Fox Run in September, St. Matthew students raised just over $11,000.00 dollars! No, there is no typographical error here: over $11,000.00! And St. Matthew School students have, in the past, achieved a comparable sum year after year after year. This is a testament to our community’s dedication to excellence with whatever objectives we undertake.
Our educational approach, obviously, is linked to a sense of destiny and mission. As educators, the St. Matthew School staff is dedicated to the formation of individuals who will use their intellectual talents to build a world of justice and mercy. Can public education have a cause more noble or worthy?
I am both honoured and humbled to serve our school community as principal. I am privileged, in my role, to get a bird’s eye-view of the many hands that work together for our students. Our teachers are exceptionally bright, gifted, and dedicated. Not only do they provide outstanding educational experiences, they volunteer for many co-curricular sports programs and enrichment opportunities. Our parent community is engaged and focused, supporting the work of the teachers at every turn. The parish also works closely beside us, providing sacramental preparation and invaluable support for religious education. Father Kaz, the parish priest, visits our school weekly – a favour that is the envy of other Catholic Schools.
Education is a sacred trust, and our way of life depends upon the progress of humanity that only education can ensure. At St. Matthew School, we are aware of our high calling. With the perseverance and determination inherent in authentic discipleship, we humbly offer ourselves to the service of Christ, His Church, our community, and one another. Come and visit us to see what a wonderful identity these foundational principles generate!
In His service,
Alger J.C. Libby, Principal
